A Simple Understanding of your "Musculoskeletal System"?
"Musculo" means Muscles, Ligaments & Tendons
"Skeletal" means Bones, Joints, & Spine
The combination of these is your musculoskeletal system. It is what makes your body move. You may think of this as the "mechanics" of your body.
Your ligaments connect bone to bone. Your tendons connect muscle to bone. Your muscles connect tendon to tendon.
Your nervous system supplies your musculoskeletal system with "energy" to direct it's movements from your brain.
Your blood supply bathes the system with oxygen and nutrient-rich fluid which aids in the healing process when an injury occurs.
An injury can either occur gradually or can be a result of sudden impact injuring the MS system directly. Predisposing MS risks are apparent in either of these scenarios.
You can sometimes cause injury to your musculoskeletal system and not even feel it. This is called "Micro-trauma". It happens on a microscopic level and you may not even know. When an accumulation of these traumas happen to the same part of the body, this results in scar tissue formation. As this scar tissue heals it shrinks and you loose function in this region.
If it is not identified and treated, your body will compensate with loss of function in another region of the body. Your body does this as a coping mechanism to balance out the mechanics affecting the way you move.
For example: This is one of the reasons, among others, you hear of people who bend over to pick something up and all of a sudden have debilitating back pain. These are the types of problems you want to prevent (if you can) by educating yourself on your musculoskeletal system.
